Toward Substantial Architectural Surfaces
UCLA Technology Seminar 2006, 2007
The objective of the studio is to unpack the highly condensed and information laden matter that produces a building’s exterior surface. This matter and the forces that shape it will be recombined to organize new surface morphologies and produce emergent behaviors. By researching and classifying surfaces generated in the last twenty years, we will distill the material, geometric, atmospheric, technical and structural ingredients that synthesize to form the effects we collectively sense. The studio will study how surfaces perform and the means by which this performance is conceived and constructed. The studio will work together to distribute expertise across its members. With this expertise, students will transform the matter, forces and geometry of surfaces into novel forms.
